EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University senior forward Chris Bach has been named the PSAC East Men's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 23.5 points and 8.8 rebounds over four games for the Warriors. He is also the ABC Trophy, Inc. Athlete of the Week at ESU.
Bach (Levittown/Harry S Truman) led the Warriors in scoring and rebounding in all four games, posting at least 18 points and seven boards in each contest, as ESU faced top-level competition in Florida Southern, St. Joseph's (Ind.), Clarion and Gannon.
ESU won one game in that stretch, a 52-49 upset of No. 4-ranked Gannon on Sunday, a day after falling 75-74 at Clarion. Earlier in the week, the Warriors lost 91-74 at Florida Southern, ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll, and led St. Joseph's in the second half before the Pumas pulled out an 80-71 win. St. Joseph's knocked off No. 2-ranked USC-Aiken the previous night.
Bach opened his week with 18 points and nine rebounds against Florida Southern, then matched his career-high with 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss to St. Joseph's.
At Clarion, he set a new career-high with 30 points, grabbed nine boards and was 16-of-20 from the foul line for the sixth-most made free throws in school history. Three of the top five marks are held by All-American Jonathan Roberts, who holds the PSAC record for made free throws in a career with 697.
Bach had 18 points and seven rebounds in the upset of Gannon, which had opened its first season in the PSAC with a 10-0 record, including a 30-point win over PSAC East preseason favorite Kutztown the previous day.
Bach is fourth in the PSAC with 20.5 points per game and is averaging 8.2 rebounds for ESU, which is off to a 7-4 start heading into this weekend's PSAC crossover games against Lock Haven and Edinboro. He is shooting 56.6 percent from the field, 81.3 percent from the foul line and is among the PSAC leaders with 17 blocked shots.
