EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University's men's basketball program will host its annual golf outing on Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Water Gap Country Club. This year's outing will raise funds for an endowed scholarship to honor the memory of Jeff Dailey. This will be the first endowed scholarship for the men's basketball program at ESU.
Dailey, a standout basketball player at Notre Dame Green Pond High School in Bethlehem, was a student at ESU when he lost his life in a fire at an off-campus house last November.
Funds from several sources will be utilized to set up a scholarship in Dailey's name, including all of the proceeds from next month's golf outing.
The men's basketball program is starting the scholarship fund in collaboration with the athletic department, and has already raised a significant portion of the $20,000 required to establish an endowed scholarship. An additional donation of $1,300 is being made by the ESU field hockey team, which sold "Do it for Dailey" t-shirts with his number 20 on the back during basketball season last year.
The funding will be supplemented by a contribution from the Jeff Dailey Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held last month at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem. The outing raised more than $45,000 and had 288 participants, according to Bob Dailey, Jeff's father.
The ESU men's basketball golf tournament will begin with a 12 p.m. shotgun start on August 8. Registration is $100 per golfer and includes dinner, a hat and a tee gift. Hole sponsorships are also available at $100 per hole. The field hockey team has secured a major sponsorship with its donation to the scholarship fund.
Individuals or businesses interested in playing or sponsoring the tournament may contact head coach Jeff Wilson at (570) 422-3339 or by e-mail at jwilson@po-box.esu.edu.
