NCBWA All-Region team

EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior outfielder Kevin Thompson and junior pitcher Jeremy Gigliotti were selected to the Atlantic Region second team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the final all-region team announced following the 2009 season.

Gigliotti (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley) was the only ESU player named to the first or second team by all three organizations. He was a first team selection on the Daktronics team as voted on by the region's sports information directors and was a second team selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Gigliotti went 5-2 with a 2.55 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 60.0 innings, including a streak of 31.2 innings without allowing an earned run.

Thompson (Bangor/Bangor) hit .401 with 51 runs batted in and 56 runs scored for the Warriors while tying single season (12) and career (17) records for home runs. He holds or shares five career records at ESU - home runs, runs batted in (124), doubles (44), extra-base hits (66) and hit by pitches (33).

He led ESU with a .500 on-base percentage and .766 slugging percentage and had 19 doubles, three triples and 12 home runs to tie teammate Mark Angelo for the school record with 34 extra-base hits and finish second behind Angelo with 128 total bases.

Angelo (Quakertown/Quakertown) and senior outfielder Mike Bortz (Wind Gap/Pen Argyl) were honorable mention on the NCBWA team. Angelo was also a first team ABCA and second team Daktronics selection at third base, while Bortz was named to the ABCA's Gold Glove team for his play in center field.

Thompson and Angelo were first team All-PSAC East picks and Gigliotti, Bortz, designated hitter John Pisker and relief pitcher Christian Saveri were all on the second team.

The Warriors set a school record with 32 wins and set offensive records for batting average (.340), on-base percentage (.432), slugging percentage (.511), runs scored (426) and runs per game (7.9), doubles (132) and home runs (44).

On the mound, Gigliotti and Saveri helped ESU post a 4.36 earned run average, its lowest in the last 25 years except for a wood bat season in 1999, along with five shutouts and records for strikeouts (374) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.5).
