EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University third baseman Mark Angelo and pitcher Jeremy Gigliotti were mentioned on the All-Region team and centerfielder Mike Bortz was on the Rawlings Gold Glove team, it has been announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Angelo (Quakertown/Quakertown) is on the first team and advances to the All-America ballot, Gigliotti (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley) is on the second team and Bortz (Wind Gap/Pen Argyl) is a second team selection in the outfield on the Gold Glove team. The All-Region and Gold Glove squads are voted on by ABCA members in the Atlantic Region, which includes the PSAC, WVIAC and CIAA.
Angelo holds five school records at ESU, where he enrolled as a graduate student after his three-year career at Bucknell University. He had a .421 batting average and set or tied records with 77 hits, 21 doubles, 12 home runs, 34 extra-base hits and 136 total bases. He had 58 RBI and scored 57 runs in 53 games for the Warriors, which included 38 starts at third base.
Gigliotti, a junior left-handed pitcher, had a 5-2 record with a 2.55 earned run average, 68 strikeouts and 60.0 innings in 11 starts this season. He posted a 1.62 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 39.0 innings in six starts against the PSAC East, which included most of his 31.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. His 68 strikeouts are the third-most in a single season in school history.
Bortz started 89 games in center field in his two years at ESU and was named All-PSAC East both seasons. This year he had 88 putouts and one assist in 53 games while playing behind a pitching staff that averaged nearly a strikeout per inning. At the plate, Bortz hit .346 with seven home runs, 20 doubles, 58 RBI and scored 59 runs while hitting primarily out of the leadoff spot.
He tied the school record for runs and was fourth with 29 walks to finish the year with a .447 on-base percentage. He also led the Warriors with 17 stolen bases and had 29 steals in his career. His .599 career slugging percentage is third at ESU and he ranks fifth with 14 home runs and ninth with 31 doubles.
