EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University senior pitcher Bill Hezel has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II second team, it was announced Thursday.
Hezel (Bushkill/East Stroudsburg North) has a 3.90 grade-point average as a Sport Management major and Business minor and went 5-1 on the mound with a 3.75 earned run average in 14 appearances for the Warriors.
He is one of four players from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and one of four pitchers from District II to be named to the team, which includes all Division II and III schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
Hezel made four starts for ESU as a senior and seven as a junior after transferring from Lehigh University. His 14 appearances were the third-most on the team this season and he had 36 strikeouts in 36.0 innings while holding opponents to a .250 batting average.
He didn't allow an earned run in his final two starts, going six innings with six strikeouts vs. Philadelphia University and five innings with four strikeouts against Lock Haven, and was one of four ESU pitchers to record five wins on the season.
His performance helped the Warriors set the school record with 32 victories. The ESU pitching staff had a 4.36 ERA, a run and a half lower than the 2008 season, and had 374 strikeouts in 394.1 innings.
ESU led the PSAC with 10 Academic All-District honorees during the 2007-08 academic year and has a conference-best eight so far this year. Hezel joins Danny Drago and Toric Robinson (men's soccer), Kailyn Buckley and Lynda Hicks (women's soccer), Matt Freed (football), Chris Bach (men's basketball) and Jackie Yandrisevits (women's basketball) as Academic All-District selections in 2008-09.
