EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior outfielder Kevin Thompson has been named the ABC Trophy, Inc. Athlete of the Week at East Stroudsburg University for his performance for the Warriors' baseball team through the first half of their schedule this spring.
Thompson (Bangor/Bangor) has a .422 batting average, 38 hits and 35 runs scored to help ESU to a 16-14 record so far this season and has started in right field and hit in the fifth spot in the order in all 30 games.
Thompson got off to a quick start, earning the first PSAC East Player of the Week award this year, and has maintained his impressive offensive numbers. He has reached base safely in all but one game and has a .540 on-base percentage and .744 slugging percentage. The on-base mark includes 11 walks and 12 hit by pitches, one off the single season record. He set the Warriors' career record last Wednesday at Columbia Union and has been hit 29 times in his career.
Thompson has 19 extra-base hits (13 doubles, two triples, four home runs) and has 22 runs batted in, one of four ESU players with at least 20 RBI. His 13 doubles are four away from tying ESU's single season mark.
He is already included in the Warriors' career record book in six offensive categories (doubles, extra-base hits, total bases, runs, RBI and hit by pitch) and is within reach of the school records for doubles, extra-base hits and RBI going into the second half of the year. He is two hits, one home run and five walks away from the top 10 in those categories entering this weekend's PSAC East series vs. Bloomsburg. The Warriors and Huskies will meet on Friday at Bloomsburg before returning to Mitterling Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second half of the four-game set.
