SLIPPERY ROCK - Dave Boyer carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and went 7 2/3 innings on the mound to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 9-5 win over Kutztown, ranked No. 1 in the nation by the College Baseball Newspaper, in the second round of the PSAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday night at Slippery Rock.

Kutztown entered the game with a 45-3 record and a 16-game winning streak after beating Shippensburg 2-0 in the first game of the day on Thursday, as the Golden Bears' starter Matt Keller lost a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning but still recorded the shutout.

Senior Josh Butler drove in four runs for the Warriors in the game, opening the scoring two-out, two-run triple in the third inning and later providing a two-out, two-run single to cap a five-run sixth inning for ESU.

The Warriors went ahead 3-0 in the fourth as Kyle Shaeffer led off with a single, stole second and scored on a base hit by Christopher Zsenak. The Golden Bears answered with a run in the fifth and two in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

ESU strung together four consecutive singles in the bottom of the sixth and took advantage of a throwing error and wild pitch to score three runs. Butler completed the big inning with a single through the left side to score Jacob De Boer (2-for-5, 3 runs) and Brendan O'Malley (2-for-5, 2 runs).

Meanwhile, Boyer didn't allow a hit until there was one out in the fifth, and faced just one batter over the minimum through the first five innings as Kutztown hit into line drive double plays in both the fourth and fifth frames. The senior improved to 3-4 on the season with the victory.

Kutztown cut the 8-3 deficit to 8-5 with two outs in the eighth before freshman Steven Prazenka relieved Boyer and got the final out of the inning. ESU tagged on another run in the bottom of the eighth as De Boer doubled to left with two outs and scored from second on a fielding error by the Golden Bears' second baseman.

Freshman Anthony Clemens got the final three outs for the Warriors, allowing only a two-out walk before getting pinch hitter Chad Lightcap to ground back to the mound for the final out of the game.

ESU will play Shippensburg on Friday at 3:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday's championship round. On the other side of the bracket, Kutztown will face California at 12 p.m., with the winner to take on Slippery Rock at 7 p.m. in another elimination game.
