EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University placed 131 student-athletes on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2008-09 academic year, the conference announced Monday.

A total of 1,859 student-athletes were recognized from the PSAC's 16 institutions, setting a new standard for the conference which includes first-year members Gannon and Mercyhurst. To be eligible for the scholar-athlete awards, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport.

The list is topped by the Pete Nevins Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which were awarded to men's basketball player Kyle Goldcamp of Gannon and women's volleyball player Jen Blasko of Slippery Rock.

The scholar-athlete of the year award was renamed in 2007 to honor Pete Nevins, who passed away earlier that year. Nevins was the sports information director at ESU from 1969 until his retirement in 2002.

ESU's scholar-athletes are headed by a conference-best 10 students who were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II teams in their respective sports: Danny Drago and Toric Robinson (men's soccer), Kailyn Buckley and Lynda Hicks (women's soccer), Matt Freed (football), Chris Bach (men's basketball), Jackie Yandrisevits (women's basketball), Bill Hezel (baseball), Paul Wagner (men's track & field) and Kristen Morby (women's track & field).

ESU also led the PSAC with five of the 30 student-athletes on the conference's Top 10 lists following each season - Bach, Yandrisevits, Hezel, Morby and Wagner. Bach and Wagner were both ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and were two of 17 PSAC student-athletes to earn the honor in 2008-09.
