EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University honored the academic achievements of its student-athletes with its annual National Student-Athlete Day Celebration, held Monday evening on campus in the Keystone Room.
The program, assembled by Professor Nancy Jo Greenawalt, Academic Coordinator for Athletics, recognized exceptional work in the classroom by the Warriors' student-athletes, as well as those who have represented ESU at the national level.
The 2008-09 Athletic Director's Honor Roll is comprised of 140 student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 while participating in a varsity sport. The number of student-athletes honored from ESU's 22 varsity sports was 25 more than last year's total.
The team academic achievement awards, now in their eighth year, were presented to the men's and women's teams with the top grade-point averages in the athletic department. The track and field team won the men's award for the second straight year and the fourth time overall after posting a 3.03 GPA. The women's cross country team was honored for the first time and had a 3.37 GPA through last semester.
Dr. Shala Davis, ESU's faculty athletics representative, recognized the Warriors' four NCAA Leadership Development Conference nominees - junior Jackie Battaglino (softball), sophomore Jasmine Johnson (track and field), sophomore Bryce Muth (baseball) and junior Toric Robinson (men's soccer).
Battaglino and Johnson have been selected to attend the conference, putting ESU among a handful of schools that will send two representatives from its pool of student-athletes.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which includes President Chris Bach (men's basketball), Vice President Alexa Detzi (women's basketball), Secretary Jennifer Buckley (women's soccer) and Treasurer Andy Heimbach (men's basketball), was also lauded for its contributions to ESU this year.
Bach, the first ESU basketball player named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team, was the guest speaker on behalf of his fellow student-athletes.
The "Winning Warrior" Award was presented to Bob Wenger for his contributions to ESU's annual Warrior Athletic Club Auction.
Nearly 30 faculty, administration and staff members received special invitations to the event after being identified by student-athletes for serving as role models, mentors and advisors during their academic careers.
Professor Greenawalt, Dr. Gioglio, President Dr. Robert J. Dillman and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Doreen Tobin also offered remarks of congratulations to ESU's athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements during the 2008-09 academic year.
