EAST STROUDSBURG - Anthony Carfagno (Phoenixville/Phoenixville) and Vanessa Andes (Ephrata/Ephrata) were chosen as the male and female Senior Athletes of the Year, Sunday at the Warriors Athletic Awards Banquet in the Keystone Room at East Stroudsburg University.
The annual Athletic Awards ceremony honored the senior athletes of the year, the scholar athletes of the year, the Dave Carlyon Athletic Training Award, the John Pooley Sportsmanship Award and team MVP and coaches award winners for all of ESU intercollegiate sports.
Chuck Seese from 93.5 WSBG and the play-by-play announcer for ESU football and basketball, served as the master of ceremonies. ESU President Dr. Robert J. Dillman, interim Vice President of Student Affairs Julie Del Giorno and Athletics Director Dr. Tom Gioglio also addressed the more than 250 people in attendance.
Carfagno is a four-year letter winner in football at ESU. In his senior season, he scored 23 times, a new ESU record. He rushed 98 times for 613 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught 53 passes for 684 yards and nine touchdowns. Carfagno finished his career with an ESU and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record 86 touchdowns, including 40 on the ground, an ESU record.
Track & field All-American Dan Gale and men's basketball standout Danny Hargrove were also nominated.
Andes is a three-time All-America selection in cross country and track & field, the only female in ESU history to earn the honor three times. She earned All-America honors twice in cross country and once in track & field, in the 10,000 meters.
Field hockey and lacrosse standout Miranda Fountain, softball outfielder Ashley Miller, field hockey player Joelle Lussi, women's basketball player Jasmine Gittens and women's soccer star Jamie Lombardo were also nominated.
Gale (Heilserville, N.J./Millville) and Lussi (Shavertown/Lake- Lehman) were honored with the Alumni Association Scholar-Athlete Award. Gale has a 3.915 grade-point average in health and physical education and is an All-America javelin thrower for the track & field team. Lussi was the team captain of the field hockey team and has a 3.914 grade-point average in elementary education.
Gale, a track and field All-American in 2004, won the college division javelin at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia this year. He threw 209 feet, five inches, his personal best, to win the event and finished second at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships. He plans to attend graduate school at the University of North Carolina and study athletic administration.
Lussi, a four year letter winner in field hockey, was selected to participate in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II North/South Senior All-Star game. Lussi scored nine goals and had two assists in her senior season and totaled 14 goals and seven assists in her career at ESU. She has a 3.914 grade-point average in elementary education.
Special recognition was given to men's basketball player Jimmy Evans (Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) who was presented with the John Pooley Sportsmanship Award. This award signifies fairness, respect for one's opponents and graciousness in winning or losing. In addition to work on the court, Evans is a member of the national Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is active both locally and nationally.
The Distinguished Service award is given to those outside of the university athletic department that make and continue to make valuable contributions to the intercollegiate athletic teams and the department. Bill Bergen was the 2006 honoree. Bergen, a 1978 graduate of ESU, is the executive secretary of the Warrior Football Club and was a four-year member of the Warriors football team.
The Dave Carlyon Athletic Training Award was given to student Matthew Walters. Each year, the Athletic Training Education Program at ESU recognizes an individual who has demonstrated excellence in the field of athletic training by exemplifying the characteristics of a remarkable graduate of our curriculum. The David Carlyon Award reminds us and the ESU Community of David's regard for others and the extent of the sacrifice he was willing to make of a love one. Tragically, David's life ended just two months after his graduation. While on a family outing, Dave made a heroic attempt to save the life of his three-year old nephew who had slipped near the falls precipice. Dave's dive put him into a position from which he would never recover. Sadly, both Dave and his nephew died. Walter is a senior in the athletic training education program at ESU and this past fall, underwent his greatest test of all at Blair Academy in New Jersey when a student-athlete died. In honor of Matt's selfless and heroic acts, people skills and giving of one's self, scholarship and clinical performance, he was presented with the Dave Carlyon Award.
The ESU Department of Athletics also presented engraved glass frames to all seniors who completed their college eligibility this past season.
