PSAC tournament bracket

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University's men's and women's basketball teams will both be in action in the quarterfinals of the PSAC tournament on Tuesday night, with the men traveling to Cheyney and the women on the road Millersville. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

ESU and California are the only two PSAC schools to qualify for the men's and women's tournament in each of the last three seasons. Both teams are making their third straight appearance for the first time in at least a decade - 1990-92 for the men, and 1994-96 for the women.

The Warriors men (18-9, 6-6) will play Cheyney (18-8, 10-2) for the fourth time this season. They split the PSAC East series and also met on the opening weekend of the season at Bowie State, where Cheyney posted an 83-73 win.

ESU dealt Cheyney one of its two conference losses, 88-85 in double overtime, in the PSAC East opener on Jan. 16 at Koehler Fieldhouse. The win was the 11th of 13 straight victories for the Warriors, who won their first two PSAC East games before losing five in a row, including three straight by two points each.

The Warriors ran off four consecutive victories from that point, including a 73-70 home win over third-seeded Millersville and a 64-54 win against Mansfield which secured the playoff bid last Wednesday. They fell 82-74 at Kutztown in the regular season finale on Saturday.

Junior forward Chris Bach has led the Warriors throughout the conference schedule, averaging 15.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and two blocked shots per game. Bach and senior forward Channon Easley (13.5 ppg this season) both rank in the top 10 in the PSAC in rebounding and field goal percentage and in the top five in blocked shots to give ESU one of the top interior tandems in the league.

Sophomore guard Dawud Lyons (8.4 ppg) has averaged 17.0 points in the three games against Cheyney, and Bach had 23 points and eight rebounds in the double overtime win in January.

Senior forward Josh Wentz (11.0 ppg) and sophomore guard Andy Heimbach (11.7 ppg) do most of their scoring from the three-point line, combining for 111 3-pointers this season, and will play key roles on the perimeter.

The ESU women (12-14, 6-6) have won three of their last four games entering Tuesday's game, with the only loss a 65-61 setback against Millersville (23-4, 12-0) on February 23 at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Marauders won 72-64 in their own gym on February 2. ESU wrapped up its postseason spot with a 64-44 win over Mansfield last week.

The Warriors are led by junior guard Jackie Yandrisevits, who is coming off consecutive 20-point games and is the leading scorer in the PSAC East at 15.9 ppg this season. She also leads ESU in rebounding (6.5 rpg), steals (44) and blocks (20), and is shooting better than 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point line.

A returning first team All-PSAC East member as a sophomore and the Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Yandrisevits is a leading candidate for Player of the Year honors after taking ESU back to the postseason following the loss of three seniors from last year's PSAC East regular season championship team.

Senior forward Monika Fogelsanger, a four-year starter, is second on the team in scoring (10.3) and rebounding (6.5) per game and is second in the PSAC in free throw shooting at 85.9 percent. She needs one more rebound to move into the top 10 in school history, and will own the top career free throw percentage at ESU.

Junior Keri Cahill and sophomores DeAnna Rayam and Mel Villano are the starters in the backcourt. Rayam gives the Warriors another scoring threat at 9.8 points per game and is near the top of the conference with 38 three-pointers and a 37.3 percentage from behind the line.

The semifinal and championship games of both tournaments will be played on Friday and Saturday, with the highest remaining seed in the East hosting the men's tournament and the top team in the West hosting the women.

Kutztown hosts Millersville in the 2-3 game on the men's side, while West Chester faces Cheyney in the women's bracket. The top seeds in the West are Edinboro (men) and IUP (women).
