PSAC release
EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University placed 123 student-athletes on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2007-08 academic year, the conference announced Thursday.
A total of 1,488 student-athletes were recognized from the PSAC's 14 institutions, surpassing last year's total of 1,420. To be eligible for the scholar-athlete awards, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport.
The list is topped by the Pete Nevins Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which were awarded to Mansfield's Chris Cummings and Slippery Rock's Jennifer Hansen, both track & field athletes. Cummings was an All-American in cross country, indoor and outdoor track this year, while Hansen earned All-America honors both indoors and outdoors in the pole vault.
The scholar-athlete of the year award was renamed last year to honor Pete Nevins, the sports information director at ESU for 33 years, who passed away in January 2007.
ESU's scholar-athletes are headed by a conference-best 10 students who were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II teams in their respective sports: Danny Drago (men's soccer), Sam Shuman (football), Chris Bach (men's basketball), Monika Fogelsanger and Jackie Yandrisevits (women's basketball), Kristen Halvorsen (softball), Sean Carr (wrestling), Julian Taibi (men's tennis), Trina Carito and Kristen Morby (women's track and field).
The Warriors are also represented by Brittany Staub, the PSAC East Women's Soccer Athlete of the Year, who is one of 14 conference athletes of the year to earn scholar-athlete honors.
