EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University will join colleges and universities across the nation in celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday, Feb. 6 during the Warriors' basketball doubleheader with Kutztown.
As part of ESU's "Take a Girl to the Game" promotion, Girl Scouts and female athletes ages 12 and under who are wearing their uniforms will be admitted to the game for free. The women's basketball game begins at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
ESU will hold a luncheon and program to honor its women's student-athletes, coaches, athletic department staff and administrators in Lower Dansbury from 11:45 to 1 p.m. Sharon Taylor, the Director of Athletics at Lock Haven University and an NCAA championship field hockey coach, will deliver the keynote address.
"This is an exciting opportunity to recognize the contributions that our women's student-athletes make both athletically and academically," said Dr. Tom Gioglio, Director of Athletics. "Their commitment and dedication to achieving excellence are the same qualities that will serve them well once they finish their playing careers at ESU.
"We also want to celebrate the girls who participate in sports throughout the Poconos and give them an opportunity to watch our outstanding role models on the women's basketball team," Gioglio said.
NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.
