EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University honored the academic achievements of more than 100 of its student-athletes with its annual National Student-Athlete Day Celebration, held Tuesday on campus in the Keystone Room.
The program, assembled by Professor Nancy Jo Greenawalt, Academic Coordinator for Athletics, recognized exceptional work in the classroom by the Warriors' student-athletes, as well as those who have represented ESU at the national level.
The 2007-08 Athletic Director's Honor Roll is comprised of 115 student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 while participating in a varsity sport. Each of ESU's 21 varsity sports was represented by multiple athletes on this year's list.
The team academic achievement awards, now in their seventh year, were presented to the men's and women's teams with the top grade-point averages in the athletic department. The men's track and field team posted a 3.18 GPA, and the women's swimming program had a 3.21 GPA through last semester.
Sophomore men's soccer player Danny Drago and junior field hockey player April Sutton were mentioned for their participation at the NCAA Leadership Academy, where they joined Director of Athletics Dr. Tom Gioglio for a series of seminars on leadership in intercollegiate athletics.
Dr. Shala Davis, ESU's faculty athletics representative, recognized the Warriors' four NCAA Leadership Conference nominees - freshman Brianne Bachman (women's volleyball), sophomore DeAnna Rayam (women's basketball), junior Chris Bach (men's basketball) and sophomore Jason Rudder (men's soccer).
Bach and Rudder have been selected to attend the conference, putting ESU among a handful of schools that will send two representatives from its pool of student-athletes.
Bach and senior field hockey player Domineque Scott were formally recognized for awards they received in January from the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. Scott was the female Academic Momentum Award winner from the Mid-Atlantic Region, and Bach was the men's runner-up.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Council, which includes President Janelle Cronmiller (women's lacrosse), Vice President Katie Fretz (women's lacrosse), Secretary Andy Heimbach (men's basketball) and Treasurer Tony Prudente (men's track & field) was also lauded for its contributions to ESU this year.
The "Winning Warrior" Award was presented to women's track and field head coach Chris Merli for his dedication and contributions to the student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the athletic department.
Nearly 30 faculty, administration and staff members received special invitations to the event after being identified by student-athletes for serving as role models, mentors and advisors during their academic careers.
Professor Greenawalt, Dr. Gioglio, Interim President Dr. Kenneth Borland and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Doreen Tobin also offered remarks of congratulations to ESU's athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements during the 2007-08 academic year.
