EAST STROUDSBURG - Sophomore Rusty Smith is the ABC Trophy, Inc. Athlete of the Week at East Stroudsburg University after breaking the school record in the 55m hurdles at the Bucknell Heptagonal on Saturday.

Smith (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany) won the event with a time of 7.59 to lower the school record by five-hundredths of a second and reach the national qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in March.

He beat a field that included five Division I schools - Bucknell, Duquesne, Lehigh, St. Francis and Towson - along with PSAC member Shippensburg. Andrew Yehl of Bucknell was second in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.73.

Each week ABC Trophy, Inc., of Stroudsburg awards an ESU Athlete of the Week. The selection is announced Tuesday and each student receives a red and silver plaque.
