Approximately
one-third of all East Stroudsburg University students are enrolled in a
teacher certification program. Graduates receive the degree of Bachelor
of Science and are eligible for certification to teach in the schools of Pennsylvania.
The programs of the Faculty of Education are nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education
and approved by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary
Schools. The curricula have been planned so that the graduate may be
recommended for certification to teach in most other states
without further course requirements. Information and advisement on
certification is available in the office of the Dean of the College of
Education: call (570) 422-3377 or e-mail Nancy Mosteller at nancym@po-box.esu.edu.
All
students are required to take the Praxis I (Academic Skills Assessment)
and Praxis II (Subject Assessment) tests. This series is an Educational
Testing Service (ETS) program that is used to qualify students for
entry into various stages of the program and as part of the
certification process. The Praxis I tests must be taken prior to 60
credits. The Praxis II tests must be taken and passed prior to student
teaching or certification. Additional information on the Praxis Series,
including registration information, may be obtained by visiting http://ets.org/praxis/index.html,
or calling (609) 771-7395. You may also contact the Office of Field
Experiences and Partnerships at (570-422-3471). Current information on
Pennsylvania's requirements for tests and passing scores can be accessed by visiting http://www.ets.org/praxis/prxpa.html.
Graduates are eligible to receive an Instructional I certificate (provisional) which is valid for
a period of six years of teaching in Pennsylvania. During the first 3
years of full-time teaching, Instructional I holders must complete 12
graduate credits, a total of 24 graduate credits must be earned by the
completion of the sixth year of teaching.
The
Instructional II certificate is issued after three years of
satisfactory teaching in Pennsylvania and upon the completion of
twenty-four semester credit hours of collegiate study at a state
approved baccalaureate degree-granting institution or through
in-service programs approved by the Department of Education. Act 48
requires that all teachers continue growing professionally by
completing 2 university courses or 180 hours of professional
development every 5 years to maintain an active certificate.
(Information on Act 48 at ESU) For further information, please contact
the Office of Continuing Education at (570) 422-3468 or e-mail Geryl
