The Honors Program at ESU was founded in 1988 as a way to offer academically superior students an opportunity to challenge themselves intellectually, both within and beyond the classroom setting. The focus of the program is located in the area of the liberal arts general education curriculum. The goal of the program is to foster in the students an appreciation of the liberal arts perspective and a commitment to lifelong learning.

  • Our mission is to invite you not only to learn about various subject areas, but also to discover the ways in which the various academic disciplines relate to each other, to the world beyond academia, and to your own life in both contexts.
  • Our mission is to enable you to acquire the thinking and communication skills necessary to assume responsibility for your own learning.
  • Our mission is to encourage you to utilize your academic experiences to develop a personal system of values. Our mission is to foster in you an attitude of responsibility to self and community; to acknowledge that "from those who are given much, much is expected."
  • Above all, our mission is to summon you to the citizenship of the mind Above all, our mission is to summon you to the citizenship of the mind
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Students are generally admitted to the Program as freshmen. Entry becomes increasingly difficult with time, since the bulk of the program requirements are in the General Education area, but we have had committed students enter the program at the beginning of their fourth year! In general, Honors Candidates include the following.

  • Prospective freshmen with SAT scores of 1150 or higher who ranked at or above the 85th percentile of their high school class are identified by Admissions and invited to the program.
  • Freshmen who do not meet the above criteria may apply to be considered for admission. Our admission policy is flexible, since we are particularly interested in motivated students who want to be in the program, but we also want to assure that students are not challenged beyond their ability.
  • Matriculated students are invited to join the program if they meet the minimum GPA requirements of 3.3 in their first two semesters. Students are recruited from the Dean's List, from faculty nominations, and from self-nominations.
  • Transfer students are also welcome to the program, by the same mechanisms open to students already matriculated at ESU. Students transferring from other Honors Programs will generally be able to transfer all Honors Courses from their previous institution.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Students who graduate through the Program will receive special recognition at graduation, as well as permanent notation on their transcripts. Successful completion of the Program includes the following basic requirements.

  • Honors students will take a minimum of 6 liberal arts courses designated as "honors." Where possible, these courses may be used to fulfill the general education requirements. In their junior or senior year, honors students will take an interdisciplinary honors seminar.
  • In their senior year, honors students will select an advisor from their major department and register for 3 credits of independent study (or research) - the Honors thesis or Project. This thesis must be in addition to the requirements for their major.

  • Honors students will maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3, and a minimum honors GPA of 3.0.
  • Honors students will be active members of the honors students program, meet with their honors advisor, maintain regular e-mail communication, and have completed a minimum of four enrichment/service activities each year.
  • Honors students will be encouraged to participate in the Honors Students Organization, which works with the Program Director to provide various enrichment and service activities.
