Teacher Certification in Speech-Language Impaired Students who wish to earn Pennsylvania teacher certification, as part of their degree program must complete two (2) separate externship semesters. They will typically complete their school placement, which requires a full semester, during the spring semester. Students seeking teacher certification in Speech Pathology in other states should visit that states web site or contact their home state's department of education.
Additional course requirements must be completed for this portion of the program, these are only necessary if seeking teacher certification:
- Education Courses:
ELED 132 Child Growth & Development (3 credits) PSED 161 Foundations of Education (3 credits) PSED 242 Educational Psychology (3 credits) REED 315 Teaching Reading to Special Needs Children (3 credits)
In order for students to be eligible for Pennsylvania Teacher Certification in Speech-Language Impaired they must complete 2 Math courses with one course being Statistics and 2 English courses with one being in Literature. These courses may be taken at the undergraduate level and may be taken at a different university (perhaps where the student completed his or her bachelor's degree). These students must also complete various portions of the Praxis Exam. See information of Praxis exam below.

SPPA 584 Management of School Programs/Speech-Language Pathology (2 credits) SPPA 586 Advanced Clinical Externship (6 credits)
Equivalents to the education courses listed above may be taken at another university at the bachelor's degree level.

These exams are a requirement of the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
These exams are not a requirement for graduation at ESU. However, the student will not be eligible for teacher certification in Pennsylvania until the exams are passed and a school placement is completed.
