Graduate Admissions Requirements

Students must be admitted in both the ESU Graduate School and to the M.S. in Speech–Language–Pathology program. Students may use the forms provided on this website to apply to the program. Students need three letters of recommendaion. The application for the program and the graduate school are two separate forms. Application deadline is February 1 for fall admission. All application documents, transcripts, and supporting material must be received no later than this date for consideration for admission. Spring admission is not offered. Admission decisions are generally made in March.

Summary of Application Materials (due February 1):

  1. Send these to the ESU Graduate School:
    1. Graduate School application
    2. Official transcripts of all college work
    3. GRE score reports (directly from ETS)
    4. Application fee
    5. Graduate Assistant application (optional)
  2. Send these to the Speech–Language Pathology Dept.:
    1. Departmental application
    2. Three letters of recommendation
    3. Statement of professional goals (1 – 3 pages)
  3. All of the above materials, including GRE score reports and all transcripts, must be received by February 1.Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Criteria for acceptance:

  1. Bachelor's degree
  2. GPA 3.0 overall; GPA 3.0 in undergraduate major
  3. Acceptable GRE General Test scores
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. Statement of professional goals (1 – 3 pages)
  6. Undergraduate preparation to include the following prerequisites:
    1. Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders courses:
      1. Introduction to communication disorders
      2. Speech and language development
      3. Phonetics or phonology
      4. Anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism
      5. Introduction to audiology
      6. Articulation/fluency disorders
      7. Speech science
    2. Other undergraduate courses:
      1. Child development or developmental psychology
      2. Linguistics or psycholinguistics
      3. Statistics
      4. College level math course (other than statistics)
      5. English composition/writing
      6. Natural sciences (6 credits), including a physical science
      7. Behavioral sciences (6 credits)

Prospective students who do not have the above undergraduate courses or their equivalents may choose to complete them at any accredited university. It should be noted that, due to limitations in the number of students who can be accepted into the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology program, not all applicants who meet the above admission requirements can necessarily be accepted.
