This degree program prepares students for teaching students with mental and/or physical disabilities as well as working with parents, general educators, and related service personnel.

The programs in Special Education reflect a curriculum that combines existing and emerging theory and best practices based upon a conceptual framework that develops educators who are reflective and deliberate decision makers.

Beginning educators develop knowledge, process, and professionalism.

Graduates of the Special Education program will be eligible for certification to teach students from birth through 21 years of age; and the Special/Elementary Education Integrated major will additionally be eligible for certification in K-6 elementary education.

All students will be required to develop a plan to demonstrate Highly Qualified status as required by federal laws. The Department offers the Integrated Program of studies cooperatively with the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, leading to eligibility for certification in both Special Education and Elementary Education.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is currently proposing changes in certification requirements which may impact program requirements.
