April 13, 2007The Philosophy and Religious Studies Department is pleased to announce the hiring of a new faculty member. Timothy Connolly is a specialist in Ancient Greek and Chinese Philosophy. As well as sections of PHIL 110 GE: Introduction to Philosophy, he will be teaching PHIL 251 GE: Ancient Philosophy in the Fall, and PHIL 212 GE: Eastern Philosophy and PHIL 353: Medieval Philosophy in the Spring.
April 14, 2007Professor T Storm Heter is giving the keynote address at the Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania.

March 20, 2006A new course has been approved: PHIL 419: 20th Century French Philosophy. We hope to be able to offer it next year.
January 25, 2006Congratulations to Philosophy majors Lauren Scott, Sara Fiorot and Stephen Meglio, and Philosophy minor Michael Jackiewicz, for making the Fall 2005 Dean's List.
December 1, 2005Dr. George Thompson, Jr., professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies, recently received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa., where he served as an adjunct professor for the past 25 years teaching weekend classes. Last spring, Dr. Thompson also received the ESU Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) Outstanding Service Award as well as a recognition award from the university's Office of Disability Services. He was also named International Professor of the Year for 2005 by the International Biographical Center of Cambridge, England and recently added as adjunct professor of Union Institute and University in Cincinnati. Ohio, serving on the doctoral committee in interdisciplinary studies as approved by the Ohio Board of Regents.
November 12, 2005Philosophy Major John Renna presented his paper, "Heidegger and Science Fiction Films" at the West Chester Undergraduate Philosophy Conference.

May 31, 2005The Department is please to announce the hiring of Dr. T Storm Heter as our new full-time, continuing faculty member. Dr. Heter has worked here as an adjunct for the past two years. Dr. Heter wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Sartre's political thinking at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
March 15, 2005The Department will be moving effective May 23. Our new Philosophy Building is at 428 Normal St. We hope to be able to host many stimulating activities in our new location.
January 10, 2005The Department would like to welcome our new part-time instructor, Dr. John Wise. Dr. Wise comes to us from the University of California, Irvine.

May 14th, 2004Dr. Thomas Eshelman is retiring after 35 years at ESU. Dr. Eshelman has taught Ancient and Medieval philosophy for us, as well as courses in Eastern Philosophy, World Religions and others. The Department wishes Dr. Eshelman well on his retirement.

May 6, 2004Congratulations to ESU Philosophy alumnus Thomas Sparrow on the successful defence of his West Chester University MA thesis on Heidegger's poetics.
April 3, 2004There was a great deal of ESU input at the Annual Conference of the SSHE Interdisciplinary Association of Philosophy and Religious Studies, held at Cheyney University. Professor Storm Heter presented his paper, "Sartrean Ethics and Obligations to Others: Between Kant and Hegel," and moderated a session. Professor Eric Schumacher, who did much to help organize the conference, also moderated two sessions. Two ESU Philosophy alumni presented papers: Timothy Volz presented "Buddhism and the Provisional Nature of Conceptual Models" and Peter Prell presented "From the Beginning Not a Thing Is." Another ESU Philosophy alumnus, Leon Niemocynski, moderated a session.
