The undergraduate can choose from a four-year program or a two-year program.

A major in Media Communication and Technology is designed to offer students a curriculum of communication theory, application and practice in media production.

Students study the theoretical foundation for applying skills in digital media:

  • Digital Media (photography, graphics and sound)
  • Electronic (television and video)
  • Web-based Publishing (multimedia, animation, visualization and graphic processes)

Majors are encouraged to qualify for a semester or summer-long internship where they can apply on-the-job skills.

The program prepares students for entry-level positions in the communications field.

Why would I want to study Media Communication and Technology at ESU?
As a MCOM major, you become a media generalist. In a world that is continually changing with computer programs evolving, people are expected to morph to meet needs. The MCOM major focuses development in a major area but also learns skills to meet evolving needs.

What does a degree in this field qualify me to do?
This is determined by your focus. Students work for industries that need publications created (web or hard copy), TV or sound studios, and some branch out in entrepreneurial pursuits.

What computer programs and equipment do you use?

  • Computer Programs - Adobe Suite - CS3® (Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, In-Design etc.), Final Cut Pro® (Film editing), Microsoft Office® for Mac & PC
  • Equipment - Digital cameras (video & still photography), microphones, HD editing suite, payback decks, various sound equipment

Can I major in only one area, such as photography?
You can focus in one area, but you cannot major in one area. In your advanced level courses, choose courses that align with your focus.

How does a major in MCOM provide me experience with the change to High Definition (HD) TV?
MCOM has a HD video editing suit. It will be ready for use Fall 2008. We are fully equipped to meet the demands of September 2009. This provides a new and exciting student challenge!

Do you have the equipment or do I have to purchase the equipment?
MCOM has a computer lab with the latest software, devoted to our students. Also, you can sign-out equipment such as a video cameras (mini DV, VHS, HD cameras) and photography cameras (digital Panasonic, Lumex, Olympus), drawing palettes, lights, microphones etc. Also, we have suites identified for editing applications.
