The Early Childhood and Elementary Education Department at East Stroudsburg University offers many scholarships for students within this major. These are just a few of the scholarships and the recipients of the awards presented in 2008.
*Anne T. Scrak Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is presented in memory of Anne T. Scrak. She was a professor of Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education at East Stroudsburg University. In order to qualify and apply for this scholarship, students need to be enrolled full time in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education program. Students need to demonstrate a high level of professional performance and service to the community and university. Students who apply for this scholarship need to have a minimum QPA of 3.0 and must have completed 60 credits at East Stroudsburg University. This year's recipient was Nicole Plesser.
*Class of 1937 Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize exceptional students preparing for a teaching career. Students who apply should have excellent rapport with faculty and fellow students. Students need to intend on becoming a teacher to qualify for this scholarship. Students need to be in the Early Childhood Education program at East Stroudsburg University. Students must demonstrate excellence in academic performance. Students need to have completed 30 credits in order to qualify. Students need to show a balance between merit and need. Candidates for this scholarship cannot graduate prior to May of the award year. This year's recipient was Kimberly Anne Satos.
*Class of 1938 Scholarship Students who apply for this scholarship must have a declared major in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education and intend on becoming a teacher. Candidates who qualify need to have a minimum QPA of 2.5 and a QPA of 3.0 in their major. There needs to be a financial need for the scholarship that is confirmed by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Students who apply must have completed 30 credits and cannot graduate prior to May of the award year. This year's recipient was Emily M. Ludwig.
*Class of 1940 Scholarship Candidates of this scholarship must be a Pennsylvania resident and declared in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education. Students must intend on becoming a teacher. Students who qualify need to demonstrate excellence in academic performance. They need to have completed 30 credits and cannot graduate prior to May of the award year. This year's recipient was Shannon Burns.
*Class of 1942 Scholarship This scholarship is given to students who have declared a major in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education and must intend on becoming a teacher. Students who qualify must have a minimum QPA of 3.0 and must show financial need as confirmed by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Candidates must have completed 30 credits and cannot graduate prior to May of the award year. This year's recipient was Fabiola Borgella.
*Class of 1954 Scholarship Full time students majoring in Early Childhood Education whose initial application indicates a parent or grandparent was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University and have the intent of becoming a teacher will qualify for this scholarship. Candidates need to have a minimum QPA of 3.0. Once all criteria are met, the scholarship committee will determine who receives the scholarship by their financial need as confirmed by Office of Student Financial Aid. Students who apply for this scholarship must have completed 30 credits and cannot graduate prior to May of the award year. This year's recipient was Christina Theiler.
*Class of 1958 Scholarship This scholarship will be given to a full time student who is declared a major in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education. The donors of this scholarship prefer this scholarship to be given to candidates related to a member of the class of '58. The recipient must demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of the history and traditions of East Stroudsburg University. Students who qualify must have a minimum overall QPA of 2.75 and a QPA of 3.0 in major. Students need to demonstrate financial need as confirmed by Office of Student Financial Aid and need to have completed 30 credits. This year's recipient was Nicole Jordan.
*Dr. Sharon Switzer, Minority English as a Second Language (ESL) in Education Scholarship This scholarship was established in the name of Dr. Sharon Switzer, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood and Elementary Education. The purpose of this award is to assist an East Stroudsburg University undergraduate minority student who is pursuing the English as a Second Language endorsement in Education. This scholarship is awarded only to minority, full time, undergraduate students. Candidates can be admitted into any department of education but need to be pursuing the English as a Second Language endorsement. Students who qualify need to maintain a minimum QPA of 3.0 and must demonstrate financial need as confirmed by Office of Student Financial Aid. This year's recipient was Diana Rivera.
*Dr. Sharon Switzer Head Start Scholarship This scholarship will be given to a PSFC Head Start alum, parent or staff person. In order for a student to be qualified, they must be affiliated with PSFC Head Start and have a minimum QPA of 3.0.
*Evelyn Boquist Kemp and the Esther Boquist Strauch Memorial Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to help mid-career students who have graduated from high school at least 5 years ago pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education. Those who qualify must be full or part time students major in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education and need to have a minimum QPA of 2.75. They also need to demonstrate financial need as confirmed by Office of Student Financial Aid and need to be of junior status.
*Michael and Marni Murphy Educational Scholarship Assisting undergraduate students majoring in Elementary Education by providing funding to continue their enrollment following their freshman year is the purpose of this scholarship. Candidates need to be a full time student with a minimum QPA of 3.0 after the first semester of the freshman year. Students must demonstrate financial need as confirmed by Office of Student Financial Aid and need to be a freshman.
*Mildred E. Beers Scholarship This scholarship is presented in honor of retired elementary school teacher and alumni Mildred E. Beers, '29. Full time students who demonstrate a high level of professional promise, a high level of service to the University, and a high level of service to the community will qualify for this scholarship. Candidates must have a minimum QPA of 3.0 and must have completed 60 credits at East Stroudsburg University and have at least two semesters left at East Stroudsburg University. This year's recipients were Jamie Harr and Stacey Marie Tramutola.
*Peggy Errico Shields Scholarship This award is given in honor of Peggy Errico Shields, class of '55. The scholarship's purpose is to assist an East Stroudsburg University undergraduate student majoring in Elementary Education. Candidates need to be undergraduate students who are declared an Elementary Education major. These students can be enrolled full time or part time and must have an overall QPA of 3.0. This year's recipient was Sara Ann Gordon.
*Robert Paxson Mekeel and Rosemary Mekeel Schwartz Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by East Stroudsburg University professor Emeritus Rose Mekeel in memory of her husband, East Stroudsburg University alumni of '32 and her daughter East Stroudsburg University alumna of '62. It is given to assist a single parent in furthering his/her education and professional training. Qualified students need to be a single parent with whom one or more minor children reside. Full time students who have completed 64 credits and have a minimum QPA of 3.0 will qualify for this scholarship. This year's recipient was Melissa Susan Pickerin.
*Ronald Christian Schwartz Memorial Scholarship This award was established by Mrs. Eva C. Schwartz in memory of her son who was an East Stroudsburg University alumnus and faculty member. Full time students who have completed at least 60 credits at East Stroudsburg University and have a minimum QPA of 3.0 will qualify for this scholarship. This year's recipient was Heather M. Formica.
*William J. Erm Memorial Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to assist an undergraduate student who wants to be a science teacher. Candidates can be full or part time students with a Minimum QPA of 3.0 in major and an overall QPA of 2.75. This scholarship is preferred to be given to residents of Monroe County. Students who qualify must have completed 90 credits.
