There are many opportunities for ESU students to have an international education experience this summer.
Following is a brief description of ESU faculty-led short-term programs listed for summer 2009:
Spring Break in Puerto Rico 
(Program now closed)
- Date: February 28 - March 8, 2009
- Credits: 3
The course Puerto Rican Society and Culture provides an overview of Puerto Rican history, art, music, folklore, ecology, geography and politics. The program is designed as a series of lectures and workshops. Students will participate in different excursions including visits to Old San Juan, Puerto Rican Museum of Art, El Yunque Rainforest, the City of Ponce, the Camuy Caverns, and Fajardo's Bioluminescent Bay. Previous knowledge of Spanish is not required as workshops and excursions are all conducted in English. ESU Summer in China*

The program is in collaboration with Shenyang Normal University (SYNU), Shenyang, China. Students enroll at ESU for three credits in Foreign Language Chinese course and transfer three credits from SYNU in areas of interest, including Chinese politics, economics and culture. With the exception of the course in Chinese language, all courses are taught in English by Chinese professors. Students go under the supervision of ESU faculty members Dr. Wenjie Yan (Communication Studies and Foreign Language) and Dr. Kenneth Mash (Political Science). ESU Summer in Ghana*

The summer main-session program includes political sciences course Africa (POLS 333 & POLS 520). The course examines relevant topics in modern Africa, including theories of development, nationalism, gender, ethnicity, religion and class cleavages, concept of states and nations, democracy and the African military, multinational companies in Africa, regional organizations, the influences of Islam and Christianity in Africa and globalization. The program includes a 15-day field experience in Ghana where students have the opportunity to visit with local authorities and non-governmental agencies. ESU Summer in Mexico*
Important Notification:
In light of the Center of Disease Control (CDC) Travel Health Warning to Mexico updated on April 30, the Provost decided on May 7, 2009 to cancel the ESU Summer in Mexico program scheduled to depart on May 14, 2009.

The six credit program takes place in Mazatlan, Mexico. All ESU students are welcome to apply. Mazatlan is a beautiful beach resort nestled in the Pacific coast of Mexico. Students enroll in communication studies course Comparative Media (CMST 410), which examines how the local media portrait globally-focused issues. Students have a one-week intense training at ESU campus prior to leaving to Mexico. As part of the course, students participate in several excursions to Mexico-controlled media corporations, including TV, radio and newspaper stations. In addition, the program includes three transfer credits in Spanish language taught by professors of Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa, Mazatlan. Faculty from UAS will offer two lecture series on topics relevant to US -Mexico international relations, including immigration, tourism, and the NAFTA trade agreement. Public Health International Program - Dominican Republic*
The ESU Health Department offers graduate and undergraduate (junior and seniors) students a 3 credit course titled International Health Science during summer pre-session. Participants will spend two weeks at ESU studying the political, economic and cultural determinants of global health and one week in the Dominican Republic analyzing the island's national health system. The program is coordinated in collaboration with the Public Health program at Universidad Central del Este, a university based in San Pedro de Marcoris. PSY 360 - St. Croix, Virgin Islands*

The course is imparted partly at ESU and partly on-site in St. Croix during summer pre-session. The program is oriented to advanced Psychology majors. For the on campus portion, the course meets for about 18 hours for intensive instruction on behavioral therapy and an overview of major theories used to compare cultures. Following, participants travel to St. Croix and tour the island for two days with focus both on social service delivery systems and historical sites. Students then work with a not-for profit agency that provides psychology services and therapies to the community. Students also keep a journal and write a reflection paper on cultural similarities and differences they observe in the therapy setting and in day-to-day activities on the island. ESU in England (Oxford)*

The courses Intercultural Communication (CMST 310 & CMST 577) explore cultural differences through field experiences (visits to English pubs/festivals), discussions (nature of communication as culture), and lectures (globalization's influence on communication). Students enrolled in the course will examine behaviors linked to different social class and the perceptions of Americans held by people in the U.K. The course is open for undergraduate and graduate students. The program is conducted in collaboration with Indiana University of Pennsylvania and includes housing in St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University, breakfast, and one meal per day. Chinese Creativity in Art and Design 2009*

The second cultural exchange will take place between East Stroudsburg University and Shanghai Normal University in China. This time the exchange, Chinese Creativity in Art and Design, will be held at ESU affiliate Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai, China
Participating students will enroll in three credits at ESU (ART 152 GE: Letterforms). This course will be taught by ESU faculty members, Prof. Darlene Farris-LaBar and Prof. Miharu Lane.
Art faculty at Shanghai Normal University will also teach workshops in Chinese Line Art, Calligraphy, Pattern Design and Chinese Art History. The program includes excursions to the Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai World Financial Center, Chenghuang Temple, N°Eight Bridge Design Center, Tianzi Fang, Mo Gan Shang Road, Xin Tian Di, a water town and Hangzhou.

Other programs
In addition to ESU faculty-led programs, students can study abroad through ESU affiliate institutions.
ISEP offers many interesting opportunities for ESU interested in studying or completing internships abroad. Programs imparted in English are available in Estonia, Finland, India, Italy, Korea and Thailand. In addition, students can go abroad and study in a foreign language.
