The National Student Exchange (NSE) is a program for undergraduate exchange within the United States and Canada. Instead of crossing oceans, NSE students cross state, regional, provincial, and cultural borders.
Through NSE, you can study for up to one calendar year at another location. With close to 200 colleges and universities from which to choose, you will likely find a university with just the right combination of courses, facilities, and environment to meet your academic and personal needs and interests.

NSE has a lot to offer. The network comprises a wide array of universities, including:
- 20 campuses with fewer than 3,000 students
- 14 campuses with more than 30,000 students
- 4 campuses with greater than 10% Native American population
- 18 campuses with greater than 10% Asian population
- 36 campuses with greater than 10% Hispanic population, including 7 universities in Puerto Rico
- 43 campuses with greater than 10% African-American population, including 15 designated Historically Black Colleges and Universities
- 75 campuses with greater than 30% of the students living on campus
A NSE experience will help you:

- All other such as get out of the cold, want to ski in higher and steeper slopes, parents moving, want a bigger campus, want a smaller campus, want to be in a big city, want to be in a small community, etc.
Eligibility
NSE participation is a privilege, not a right. Listed below are the minimal requirements for NSE participation. All of these requirements are applicable at the time of application and at the completion of the term prior to your exchange:
- Full–time enrollment at your home campus
- Minimum home campus cumulative GPA of 2.5 (4.0 scale)
- Good academic standing as defined by your home institution
- No incomplete grades from previous terms
- No current or pending probationary status due to academic dishonesty or misconduct
- No outstanding financial obligations to your home institution
- No current or pending probationary or disciplinary action for violation of codes of student conduct
- Must not be on probation, parole, or have any pending legal judgments
Language
The language of instruction at all NSE campuses in Puerto Rico is Spanish. Students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions, do written work, and take examinations in Spanish.
If you are planning to exchange to Puerto Rico, you must demonstrate Spanish language proficiency as part of your home institution's application process.
The language of instruction at the Universite de Sherbrooke is French. Students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions, do written work, and take examinations in French.
If you are planning to exchange to the Universite de Sherbrooke, you must demonstrate French language proficiency as part of your home institution's application process.
For all other NSE locations, the language of instruction is English. Students for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate English language proficiency as part of the home campus application process. TOEFL, MELAB, or other language tests may also be required by some host campuses for students whose first language is not English.
Housing
On–campus housing is available at most NSE campuses, and some NSE members may require or strongly encourage students to reside in on–campus facilities. Some campuses are able to provide limited assistance in recommending off–campus housing, particularly on those campuses where there are no on–campus residence facilities. If you live off campus, you do so at your own discretion and risk.
