The Department of Movement Activities and Lifetime Fitness is housed in the College of Health Sciences at East Stroudsburg University, and was established in 2004 after the Department of Movement Studies and Exercise Science reorganized into smaller departments. This department contributes directly to the university-wide curriculum by offering all students activity courses to meet General Education requirements in fitness, and dance and theory classes for General Education in the fine and performing arts.

The mission of the Department of Movement Activities and Lifetime Fitness is to provide opportunities for students, through relative courses, to acquire the knowledge and skills which contributes to a healthier lifestyle to improve the quality of their lives through a lifelong practice of physical activity.

It is the goal of the department not only to provide students with opportunities to participate in a variety of activities, but also to supply the underlying theoretical knowledge to facilitate participation in activities throughout the lifespan. Importance is placed on the application of knowledge, skills, and strategies aimed at management of stress and reduction of risk factors for chronic disease. The department accommodates the physical activity needs of individuals of all ages and abilities, and in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Department of Movement Activities and Lifetime Fitness provides opportunities for students to acquire the knowledge base and skills needed to pursue and enjoy physical activity. Since its inception, the focus of the FIT area has been to provide all students with courses to meet the General Education requirements for graduation. Students at ESU have been able to satisfy their General Education Requirements by successfully completing two credits from twenty one FIT activities presently being offered. These course offerings are intended to improve student skill and knowledge that will enhance their perception of the importance and pleasure of sport, exercise, dance, and lifetime fitness.

Transfers and Accommodations

All FIT activities will include accommodations to meet the physical activity needs of individuals with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Prior military service or law enforcement experience is not accepted for FIT credit.
