Geography Minor

Geography

Geography is the science of place and space.

Geographers ask where things are located on the surface of the earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with the environment.

Geographers examine the relationships between human activity and natural systems.

Why Study Geography?

Studying geography can provide an individual with a holistic understanding of our planet and its systems.

Those who study geography are better prepared to understand topics impacting our planet such as climate change, global warming, desertification, El NiƱo, and water resource issues.

Geography provides students with knowledge about our rapidly-changing world and how humans are impacting our planet.

Department Programs

The Geography Department offers a Minor at the undergraduate level. Because Geography is unique in linking the social sciences and natural sciences together, the Geography Minor is an excellent addition to a variety of majors. At ESU, Geography Minors have the opportunity to conduct fieldwork and analyze their field data using GPS units and GIS mapping software.

Starting in the Fall of 2012, the Geography Department now offers a new interdisciplinary Master of Science (M.S.): Application of GIS and Remote Sensing in Environmental Science.
