Every year, ESU offers Summer programs for students interested in studying abroad for a shorter period. Following is a brief description of ESU faculty-led summer programs:
China
The program takes places at Shenyang Normal University (SYNU) in Shenyang, China. The program includes roundtrip airfare, tuition at ESU, tuition at SYNU, room & board, travel within China, and health insurance. Students enroll in CMST 485 (one credit) and transfer from SYNU three credits in Basic Chinese, and three credits in areas of interest including Chinese politics, Chinese economics or language culture. This program provides opportunities for students to study Chinese language and culture. With the exception of the course in Chinese language, all courses are taught by in English by Chinese professors. England
The courses POLS 332 & POLS 540 are offered in post-session with Oxford University in collaboration with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The courses emphasize the political functions and structures of governments in Great Britain in comparison with those of the United States. Extensive field experiences include the British Parliament and Old Bailey. The program cost of approximately $2,650 ($2,750 based on single room) includes tuition, daily English breakfast, 3-course meal from Monday to Friday and trips associated with the class. The courses THTR 420 & THTR 520 are offered in post-session with Oxford University as the learning site and in collaboration with IUP. These courses explore myth and ritual as they relate to theater both in its primary foundations as in its modern applications. The use of masks and various primary aspects of theater and acting will be examined. The course will culminate in an informal performance, reflecting elemental acting skills as they relate to mythological and ritualistic foundations for theater. Ghana
The courses POLS 520/POLS 333 GE: Africa are offered in the post-session. The courses examine relevant topics in modern Africa, including, theories of development, nationalism, gender, ethnicity, religion, and class cleavages, concepts of states & nations, democracy and the African military, multinational companies in Africa, regional organizations, the influences of Islam and Christianity in Africa, Africa and the United Nations and globalization. Austria & Germany
The course HIS 270 explores the origins and development of Central Europe, focused on the period between 1500 and 1789. Participants learn about the Reformation, the Thirty Years War and the contributions of the Roman Empire as incubator of politics. The program includes roundtrip airfare, room/breakfast, ground transportation, orientation, weekly bus passes, cultural activities and three full meals. Students must enroll in the course at ESU and are required to participate in three tours (Munich, Salzkammergut and Berchtesgaden). The courses HIS 473 & HIS 521 explore the origins and development of early modern Germany to the present. Selected sites will be used to examine aspects of the First Reich, the Reformation; development of the Modern German state, 10th century Germany, the Third Reich and Federal Republic. The course is imparted in conjunction with Cultural Studies Abroad. The program cost of $3,899 includes roundtrip airfare, room/breakfast, ground transportation, orientation, weekly bus passes, cultural activities and three full meals. Additional expenses include ESU tuition for three credits, three required tours to Munich, Salzkammergut and Berchtesgaden ($330) and meals.
Virgin Islands - St. Croix
This course is imparted partly in the ESU campus and partly on-site in St. Croix (Pre-Session). The program is oriented to advanced Psychology majors who approved appropriate prerequisite courses. The course meets for about 18 hours at ESU for an intensive training session on behavioral therapy and an overview of major theories used to compare cultures. Following the theoretical portion, course participants travel to St. Croix and tour the island for two days with focus on both social service delivery systems and historical sites. Students then work in a group home, applying therapy procedures. Students also keep a journal and write a reaction paper on cultural similarities and differences they observe in the therapy setting and in day-to-day activities on the island. In addition, ESU is part of the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. With some restrictions, students may participate in the summer programs offered at any of the 14 universities.
