Assistive Technology is any device that is used to maintain, increase or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Students may be eligible to use various assistive technology as part of their accommodations.
The Office of Disability Services employs an assistive technology specialist to assist eligible students with their assistive technology needs. The office provides various equipment that students may sign–out on a semester–by–semester basis, as well as computer programs and related services.
Computer Programs include:
- Scanning and reading programs for textbooks
- Text enlarger programs
- Text–to–speech reading programs for use with e–text or for Internet access
- Speech–to–text programs that eliminate keyboarding
Equipment includes:
- Voice–activated tape recorders for tape recording lectures
- Four–track tape players for use with tapes from RFB&D
- Hand–held talking spell–checkers
- Talking calculators
- Reading pens for portable text–to–speech access
- Laptop computers for exams
Other services include:
- Brailling for handouts and tests
- Captioning for videos
- Closed circuit TV microscope
Taped textbooks:
ESU maintains an institutional membership with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) in order to provide taped textbooks to eligible students with print related disabilities. Digitally recorded CDs and access to texts through the Internet will be available in the near future.
Other equipment, programs, and services may be available on an individual, as needed basis.
