ESU Honors Five University Faculty Authors at Fifth Annual Reception

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania will honor five published faculty members at its fifth annual Authors’ Reception on November 17 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the lobby of Stroud Hall. The Authors’ Reception is designed to recognize and honor university authors whose books have been published during the preceding year. This year’s event will honor authors whose books were published in 2008.

This year’s authors and their 2008 published works include: Dr. Marilyn J. Narey, assistant professor of early childhood and elementary education, author of Making Meaning: Constructing Multimodal Perspectives of Language, Literacy, and Learning through Arts-Based Early Childhood Education (Springer, New York, N.Y., 2008); Dr. Linda K. Rogers, professor of early childhood and elementary education, author of Shaped by the Standards: Geographic Literacy through Children’s Literature (Teacher Ideas Press, Westport, Conn., 2008); Dr. Bonnie A. Green, associate professor of psychology, a co-author of Statistical Concepts for the Behavioral Sciences, 4th Edition (Allyn & Bacon, Boston, Mass., 2008); and Dr. Gregory Byron Dwyer, professor of exercise science and Dr. Shala E. Davis, professor of exercise science, co-authors of ACSM’s Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual, 2nd Edition (Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, Md., 2008).

This will be the first time this event is held in the newly remodeled Stroud Hall lobby. Previous author programs were held at the university library. Stroud Hall is the largest academic classroom building at ESU. The lobby space was recently re-designed with a new, contemporary look which offers an attractive and pleasant entryway to the university’s academic hub, featuring display cases appropriate for the permanent university author book collection. The cases will display the books authored by 2008 honorees as well as the books of ESU authors honored at previous receptions. The lobby’s refurbishment also includes a floating wood plank ceiling system with accent lighting, a new porcelain tile floor, and an enhanced display of the existing wall mounted artwork. The new furniture was arranged to provide students with a comfortable place to relax and socialize between classes.

The authors’ reception program will include welcoming comments from Dr. Edward Owusu-Ansah, dean of the library and university collections, congratulatory remarks by Dr. Marilyn Wells, the interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, and presentation of honorees by University President, Dr. Robert J. Dillman.

Members of the University Authors’ Reception committee are: Dr. Edward Owusu-Ansah, dean of the library and university collections, co-chair; Leslie Berger assistant professor, librarian, and co-chair; Dr. Joseph Ashcroft, distinguished professor of communication studies; Dr. Alberto Cardelle, professor of health studies; Dr. Robert Fleischman, professor of sport studies; Brenda Friday, associate director of university relations; Dr. Maureen McLaughlin, professor of reading; Dr. Elaine Shuey, professor of speech-language pathology; Douglas Smith, director of university relations; Michael Southwell, assistant vice president of instructional support and outreach, and Linda Van Meter, assistant professor and psychologist of counseling and psychological services.

The reception is open to the general public at no cost. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Leslie Berger at (570) 422-3597 or lberger@po-box.esu.edu.
