Campus Community Alcohol Coalition Plans Door to Door Neighborhood Event

East Stroudsburg University administrators, staff and students and community leaders from the boroughs who are members of a new Campus Community Coalition on Alcohol and Other Drugs, have been meeting over the past year. The Coalition’s purpose is similar to that of similar task forces at virtually all community based universities, which is to address solutions to student behavior perceived to be the result of drug and/or alcohol use which may affect community neighborhoods and residents.

One of the first projects born of this new Coalition’s ideas is the creation of a Neighborhood Awareness Guide which will be distributed door-to-door by coalition members and other volunteers on October 6 from 4:30-7:00 p.m.

The personalized distribution of the guide to residents in neighborhoods where students live, is designed to demonstrate that the university and the coalition are working to make a difference in effectively addressing concerns of the residents.

The borough mayors, police, business people, social services, clergy and ESU students, faculty, administration and staff have been discussing neighborhood problems at the Coalition meetings and view this as the first of many new initiatives.

The Neighborhood Awareness Guide contains tips for creating neighborly relationships, important campus/borough phone numbers, ESU policy for off campus students, borough codes, fire safety, safe party advice and resources for local information. The guide suggests, among other things, that neighbors meet one another to exchange phone numbers for emergency and community safety purposes.

The October 6 booklet distribution begins with a Kick–Off reception to be held in Beers Hall on the ESU Campus at 4:00 p.m. Street assignments and booklets will be available there. Assignments for booklet distribution will be made in advance for those unable to attend the Kick–Off.

The Coalition is seeking volunteers to help with the booklet distribution. If you or your group is able to help, please RSVP to Randy Light, at rlight@po-box.esu.edu or 570-422-3298.
