MADELON POWERS GALLERY AT EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA TO PRESENT HERB WEIGAND-RECENT PAINTINGS JULY 7 - AUGUST 8, 2008
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.- Herb Weigand-Recent Paintings, works by the painting instructor and chairperson of East Stroudsburg University's Department of Art, will be featured July 7 to August 8 at the Madelon Powers Gallery of the university's Fine and Performing Art Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.
Summer gallery hours are noon - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The gallery is open to the public at no cost
Weigand's paintings are executed in acrylic paint on a variety of surfaces: paper, canvas, and slate. His work combines abstract, geometric grounds with photo-silk-screened images and often evoke mythological associations. The surfaces of the paintings are scuffed and sandpapered to produce a worn, battered look.
Weigand thinks of his paintings as personalities upon whom the cares of a lifetime have taken their toll. The titles of the paintings give hints to the mytho-poetic meaning of his works. His subjects come from folk tales, mythology and literary imagery.
During the past 20 years, Weigand has exhibited his works extensively, including solo exhibitions in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Rome, Italy. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Southampton College of Long Island University an M.F.A. in painting from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in art education from the Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to ESU, he taught at the secondary school level and at the University of South Carolina.
