ESU Physics Department Hosts Aspiring Cub Scout Scientists
The East Stroudsburg University Department of Physics hosted the fourth annual Webelos Scientist Event for area Cub Scouts on Saturday, April 26. Seventeen visiting scouts spent the day on ESU's campus to complete all requirements for the Webelos "Scientist Badge." Faculty members from the physics, chemistry, and geography departments, along with local scientists and teachers, volunteered their time to participate in this event.
The visiting scouts started their day in Moore Biology Building, where they interviewed scientists including: Dr. Robert Cohen, professor and chair of physics; Dr. Michael Doherty, professor of chemistry; Dr. Shawn Hu, assistant professor of geography; Mrs. Sheila Bove, gifted support teacher at J.T. Lambert Intermediate School in East Stroudsburg; and Mr. Paul Fierro, physics teacher at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pa.
The scouts were also involved in a series of scientific demonstrations in Gessner Hall. After lunch, participants launched bottle rockets and designed experiments to determine how quickly various objects roll down a ramp. The afternoon concluded in ESU's Moore Biology Building, where the scouts presented their experiment results to parents and peers before watching a liquid nitrogen show by Mr. Fierro.
