ESU Hosts Peace Corp Recruitment Event, Draws 17 Interested Students
In 1960, John F. Kennedy challenged students to serve their country by working in developing countries. Since then more than 190,000 Peace Corps volunteers have served in 139 countries, working on issues ranging from education to health. At East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, 17 students recently attended an information session and expressed interest in joining the Peace Corps and serving in Africa, the Middle East, South America or Asia.
On April 15, Peace Corp Recruiter and Former Volunteer Jody Tilbury held a recruitment event at ESU, describing her experiences serving as a health worker in a small village in Zambia. Her inspiring message was followed by a round table discussion consisting of ESU's Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Acting Provost Peter Hawkes, Chemistry Professor Conrad Bergo and Professor of Academic Enrichment and Learning David Rheinheimer. Dr. Hawkes shared his experiences of teaching fifth graders in Libya, Dr. Bergo spoke about teaching at a college in Northern Thailand, and Dr. Rheinheimer shared stories about his service in Uganda.
This information session is part of ESU's service learning initiative. For more information about service learning, contact Dr. John Kraybill-Greggo, assistant professor of sociology and chair of ESU's service learning committee, at (570) 422-3844 or visit www.esu.edu and search "service learning."
