University Service Award Presented at ESU's Winter Commencement

The University Service Award was presented to Christian Geirsson of Orwigsburg, Pa., at winter commencement exercises at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, December, 2007.

The University Service Award is presented to an outstanding senior who has demonstrated exceptional service to the university through on-campus extra-curricular activities. To be eligible for the awards, a student must have attended the university for at least two years and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.60 or above.

Geirsson, who majored in English, received his B.A. degree Saturday.

Active in numerous student activities throughout his years at ESU, Geirsson was a member of the university's Student Senate for three years. He held positions as assistant news editor and editor for the student newspaper, The Stroud Courier, from 2004 through 2006. For the past two years, Geirsson was a community assistant at the University Ridge Apartment complex, and served as a member and treasurer of Sigma Tau Delta, the English department's honor society. He was also an active member of University Senate and the Middle States Steering Committee for two consecutive years.

He was on the Dean's List seven of his eight semesters at ESU. He also received numerous honors while on campus, including: the 2007 President's Outstanding Service Award; the 2007 Honorary Recognition as a Distinguished Student at the 26th Annual Honors Convocation; the 2006 Jim Barniak Award for an outstanding journalism student presented by ESU's English department; the 2005 Mary E. Sobrinski Award presented by the ESU English department; the 2005-06 Student Senator of the Year; and the Spring 2007 Student Senate Executive Board Senator of the Semester.

Geirsson is the son of Jon and Patricia Geirsson of Orwigsburg, Pa. He is a 2003 graduate of Blue Mountain High School in Schuylkill Haven, Pa.
