NYIT Knocks Off ESU 2-0 in NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Northeast Regional
EAST STROUDSBURG - No. 4 seed NYIT upset No. 1 East Stroudsburg University 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Northeast Regional on Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The loss ends ESU's season at 19-3-1. The Warriors tied the school record for victories, which they share with the 2003 team that also went 19-3-1. The match was the first postseason game held at Eiler-Martin Stadium since 2000, when ESU advanced to the Final Four for the only time in school history with a 4-2 win over New Hampshire College.
Ryan Blachly gave NYIT an early lead with a goal off a corner kick 9:28 into the match, and Kyle Cupid added the second goal with an assist from Oscar Gonzales in the 37th minute.
That was all the scoring the Bears would need, as they laid back and allowed ESU just one shot in the final 45 minutes.
Cosimo D'Agostino made two saves to record the shutout for NYIT. Larry Pokrywa made six saves for ESU.
NYIT advances to the regional final on Sunday at 1 p.m. and will face defending national champion Dowling, which knocked off Bridgeport 2-0 in the first match of the night.
