Policy Statement:

Pennsylvania law requires all students residing in university-owned housing to provide proof of meningitis vaccination or have a waiver of exemption for medical, religious, or personal belief reasons. Students will provide this information during the application process for housing.

Any member of the university administration, residence hall staff, or other university department receiving information about a suspected case of meningococcal meningitis shall relay this information immediately to the Director of University Health Services or nurse on duty at the health center.

The informant should attempt to have at least the following information: student’s name, student ID number, and if possible, the name and phone number of treating physician or hospital.

When it is determined that there is a potential case of meningococcal meningitis, the Director/ designee will contact the Pennsylvania Department of Health for assistance and direction.

The plan of action will be based on the recommendations set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The Director/designee will notify the Vice President for Student Affairs and the current contracted medical provider for University Health Services to develop a plan of action which may include other university departments.
