Policy Statement:

The University will make reasonable efforts to keep space temperatures in occupied spaces between 68°F - 71°F for heating and between 72°F - 75°F for cooling.

The University may deviate from these ranges in areas where special needs exist.

Space temperatures may be allowed to drop during unoccupied times to as low as 50° F in winter and rise to no more than 85° F in summer.

No portable heating or cooling devise may be used in University owned spaces unless it is either provided by the University (through Facilities Management) or its use is approved by the University (Facilities Management).

Such devices may only be utilized in areas not served by a central heating/cooling system or where this may be necessary in isolated locations to maintain the established temperature parameters.

Appeal Statement:

All requests for a departure from the defined temperature parameters, or use of any portable heating or cooling devices, should be sent to the Facilities Management Department.

Definitions:

Space Temperature: The temperature of an occupied space, as determined by the energy management room sensor, digital thermometer or data logging device approved by Facilities Management.

Occupied times:

  1. Administrative Buildings: Monday - Friday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM (except holidays).
  2. Classrooms/academic use spaces: In accordance with the published class schedules.
  3. University Library spaces: All scheduled operating hours.
  4. Residence Halls: To be determined jointly by Residence Life, Conference Services and Facilities Management.
